SLEEPING, DREAMING

Oil on canvas, 30″X40″

Somewhere in the middle of the ocean sperm whales sleep. They sleep upright, lulled by the rhythmic swaying of salt water. Their brain is five times the size of a human. Half of it falls into a deep sleep, and the other half is awake. I believe they dream, just like me. I also think that whales are the sentinels of the universe. Looking at them, I remember the words of Franz Kafka from his story “In the Night”:

“Why are you watching? Someone must watch, it is said. Someone must be there.”
